I can confirm that the dissertation you submitted as part of your degree programme was uploaded to the Turnitin website in February 2012. Although the Moodle website that you used to submit to Turnitin has now been de-activated it is still possible for us to access expired courses. As such, I was able to download the paper that you submitted to Turnitin and I have attached an electronic copy of this for your information. I noted that the originality report indicated a 14% percentage match to other sources and no match was made to the MPRA paper. With regard to the storage and availability of students dissertations, I retained the hard copy of your dissertation for one year before it was confidentially disposed of. This was stored whilst we were in the Adam Smith Building in my office that was locked when I was not available. Once Economics moved to the business school within the main building, all assessed work was transferred into a lockable tambour unit (storage cabinet) within the business suite. Access to the suite for students is between 8.45 am and 4pm Monday through Friday. The remainder of the time, the suite is only accessible by staff ID cards. It is possible for students to view dissertations however they are only able to do this within the reception or the use of a “drop-in room” the dissertations must be handed straight back to the administrator and no dissertation is allowed to leave the area. We also maintain a small database of prize-winning dissertations (permission granted by the student, and made anonymised). These documents are in pdfs are only available to the students and staff enrolled in that course for the year. I can confirm that after reviewing the available ones, yours is not one of the 6 online. If you wish further clarification or information, please do not hesitate to get in touch. They can assist with confirming that you submitted the dissertation that can be found on the MPRA web site. You raise a second issue in an earlier email – how someone was able to access your work – and they will be able to tell you what arrangements are in place for storage and access to UG dissertations. I have also copied your email to relevant academic colleagues, simply for information at this stage.
